EBOOKS

UKZN Libraries subscribes to a number of online e-book platforms. We also offer a number of eBooks which can be accessed from our webpage https://library.ukzn.ac.za/e-books/

All ebooks that UKZN subscribes to are listed in the catalogue with a button to click to get to the full text. Most books are housed on the Ebscohost and Proquest platforms. The catalogue itself does not contain the full text, when you click on the link you are taken to the place where the ebook is housed. Number of copies available, conditions of use, downloadability etc are all dictated by the publishers and provided on the home screen of each book.

Frequently asked questions about ebooks

What can't  I access an ebook ?

  • At UKZN, some eBook platforms limit the number of people who can access a title at the same time — often just one to three users.
  • If you receive a message saying the eBook is currently in use, it simply means all available copies are being read. Please try again after a few minutes — access will open up once another user closes the book. If you continue to experience difficulties accessing an eBook, please contact your Librarian.

How can I download the book, or a chapter?

When viewing an eBook, first look at the Availability section of the title. This is publisher permission that indicates the number of pages available for download. This number can vary depending on the total number of pages of the book and is set by the publisher.  You may also need to download Adobe Digital Edition. Most major publishers use Adobe Digital Editions, a free reader that allows you to read and download ebooks, providing the optimal format for use across PC, Mac, tablets, and mobile devices. It is also available on the App Store & Google Play.
