Physical closure of UKZN libraries

Libraries are open 24 / 7.

Closed daily 12 pm - 1pm for sanitising   

Most staff continue working remotely and business communication will continue as per lockdown regulations. Librarians remain available to provide virtual support for teaching, learning and research. 

Browsing of the collections will now be allowed, however, a book retrieval service is offered. Users may submit requests for circulating material. Books may be returned to the Issue Desks or Book drop boxes. Users who do not have permission to access campuses are requested to keep the items until campuses re-open. All items on loan will be renewed and library fines for overdue material will be waived.

If you are using our library resources from outside the university please click on Off Campus Access to be able to access those resources that are available beyond campus. Go to Resources, then Off Campus Access. You will then need to login with your UKZN login and password.

Training schedule

  • General basic training in a  range of library products will take place from mid February 2020 for several weeks. The training will include the library catalogue; Google Scholar; Ebscohost; Sabinet and more.
  • Training takes place in the training lan on the lower ground floor of the main library.
  • Booking sheets are placed on the notice board in the entrance to the main library.
  • The library training programme is advertised in the library, on the University's email notice system; the UKZN Facebook page and via lecturers


Venue: Multimedia Classroom (Training room / MMC), Cecil Renaud Library (Main Library), Lower ground floor (next to the photocopy machines).

Book Retrieval Service

  • No browsing of collections will be allowed. 
  • The Library collections will remain closed-access.
  • Students and staff may submit requests for circulating material (indicated on the Library catalogue) at the Issue Desk or via email or telephone, using the following generic email addresses: Step-by-step guide
  • Users will be requested to place a HOLD on the system for the item (pick-up location will be their home library).
  • Library staff will retrieve the item from the shelves and have it ready for collection at the Issue desk. They will communicate the date and time for collection.
  • Books will be handled within the health and safety regulations regarding COVID-19 and while adhering to social distancing protocols.
  • Lending of Academic Reserve items will be restricted to prescribed books only.
  • Please search the Library catalogue for an electronic version of the book or consult your Subject librarian.
