Geology: Books

Geology is the study of the Earth, the materials of which it is made, the structure of those materials, and the processes acting upon them.

Academic Reserves

The Library's iLink catalogue indicates what books have been placed in Academic Reserves.

Academic Reserve material cannot be removed from the library during the day. Material are loaned out for a period of two hours and can be renewed based on demand. In order to use the Academic Reserves you need a student card as well as the author and title of the book that you need to borrow.

Academic Reserves has been relocated to Level 4 of the Westville Campus Main Library.

What if a book is not available at UKZN?

      

UKZN Library offers an Interlibrary loan service as well as Inter-campus loan. InterLibrary loans refers to requests received for material not available at UKZN libraries and a team on each campus library will work with this. Inter-campus loans refers to loans between UKZN libraries and such items will be issued to students and staff on their library account.

Print books and online books: an introduction

Prescribed and recommended books: Academic Reserves

Copies of prescribed and recommended books are often kept in the Academic Reserves sections of the libraries. Academic Reserves materials may not be taken out of the library during the day but can be used in the Library for a period of two hours and is renewable.

General book stock 

The general book stock is arranged on the open shelves in number order (see left hand column box for a detailed list), most within the number ranges:

  • 520-523 for Astronomy
  • 530-539 for Physics
  • 540 - 549 for Chemistry
  • 550-559 for Geology
  • 620's Applied Physics and Engineering
  • 660's Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and related technologies.

Undergraduates may borrow 6 items for a two week period. Honours students may borrow 15 books for 21 days, Masters and PhD students 20 books for 42 days and staff 30 books for 90 days. Books may be renewed if not requested by another borrower. http://ukzn.worldcat.org/ on the Library's website may be used to track the location and availability of an item. 

Dictionaries and encyclopedias

Geology dictionaries and encyclopedias are available in the libraries. These can be found on level 5 of the Westville Campus Main Library (R550 - R559)
